The British Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology funded an educational grant 1 year ago. The winners of this grant produced an educational resource aimed at adolescents in order to educate and inform them about the variation of the normal vulva.
This is largely in response to the worrying continuing trend of teenage girls requesting labial reduction surgery for entirely normal vulvas. It is hoped that increased education in a format and design which would appeal to this target audience will help to reverse this trend.
The resource is entitled “So what’s a vulva anyway?” and was launched at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists by the college president Professor Lesley Regan at the annual joint RCOG/BritSPAG meeting. It was very well received by the audience and was trending on the BBC website shortly after.
